The light is working rather well. I read other reviews saying that the frame is not stable enough, but it seems pretty stable to me.

The fittings are very tight and I had to use the rubber mallet to put the top bar onto the legs (as described in the directions).

The light serves its function well and saves you the time to building a growing light set up yourself. You can certainly purchase the bulb and a light fixture at home depot for less, but will have to be industruous enough to build a hanging set up.

The instruction that came in the packet is only for the light fixture. It took me 5 minutes to figure out how to put the stand together but it was not too difficult. It seems very sturdy and the light is VERY bright.

I was hesitant after reading the review of this item saying it was flimsy. It is sturdy, doesn't wobble and is perfect for starting seedlings or growing indoor gardens. I would buy this item in a second if this type of gardening is what your after. Great product and delivery.

Went together quickly and easily, is lightweight and easily moved, raises and lowers without any difficulty, light works perfectly. I have grown countless seedlings under this light. It's major benefit is not having to think about it because it's a simple piece of equipment that simply works. Just don't try to use it as a hand rail because it is very light and will not hold up under heavy pressure. Would definitely recommend this product and will buy another in the near future.

Reviews

I've been using this for a couple of months. The only problem I've had, is that condensation on the dome will leak out when you move the tray. Other than that, it works well and is priced well.

I dont think I would pay much more for this than a regular heat mat - the value in this product is the heat mat. The only reason I bought this one was it was less expensive than most other heat mats. The mat works fine, and the germination station is handy, but it is just a cheap plastic container. Having said that, I dont know if you need much more than that to germinate plants, so I wouldnt consider that a con.

I find that convenience often outweighs the quality or even usability of the product. The thought that you could just place your plants out of sight out of mind while some miraculous grow kit does the work for you is an ideal based on nonsense. If it was that easy, there wouldn't be instructions.

I have found that warmth assists in germination over 40 years of gardening. But I don't buy a dedicated germination kit. The standard seeding kits available for $3.00 are fine. I have one I like for the windowsill, not because I love the brand or soil it contains, but because it FITS ON THE WINDOWSILL!! That makes it convenient for me and agreeable to the wife.

Heating pads are kind of silly. The cost is ridiculous and, if you really want to heat your seedlings, then put an electric blanket or throw under them. You can get a single blanket electric or throw for about $20 and you can sit like 6 of these starter trays on them and warm them all with a totally reusable unit.

I did notice that when on the electric blanket, the seedlings start a bit earlier. And if in a colder area (basement/attic) the blanket was essential to get them to kick into gear. But the blanket is huge and you can cover a much wider starting area. If you want a smaller area, fold the blanket. Low temp is usually enough to keep my kit around 70, but your environment may be different. Don't put either outside in 20 degree weather or you will get chilling results.

At any rate, these warming seed starting kits are a waste of money. If you have absolutely no sun exposure or are starting so many you can't keep them in the house on a window sill or near any window, then get a heating blanket and a grow light. Much cheaper in the long run.

Although it may seem a little over priced, it is the convenience that you pay for. The product is exactly what it shows, a plastic tub with a plastic top, plastic dirt moldings, and a heating pad. If you think about the price of the heating pad that fits perfectly with the container, it is well worth the while.

In addition, I have had success with this product. I grow indoor coffee, and I have received a much quicker germination rate; as well as being healthier. Furthermore, it gives you great control of not only temperature, but humidity. In my opinion, that is a major plus.

I spent months trying to sprout different kinds of seeds, from brugmansias to palms...with a very low success rate. Then I decided to give this product a try and I finally began to see the results!! The constant heat is a must. I have also bought the big dome station which I prefer for its space and included ventilation on top. I'm really happy with these items. If handled with care they will last over and over.

I bought this item for my wife for Christmas. Following instructions, the seeds came up, and then turned light green, withered, and died. We have done as the instructions said, and are quite unhappy with the results. We would be willing to give it another try if we could get additional English Garden seed pods, as we originally bought.

We are mature, in our 70's, and not used to complaining, but this kit is certainly not up to expectation.

Gene Lehman

It is a fine product if you don't want to deal with dirt and seeds. It is easy to set up, and not much attention is needed after setting up the system. You can also switch to different seed kit using the same system.

It works like a dream! Small enough for apartments but gives you wonderful results. New pods and replacements are easy to find, so you can always have a small indoor garden year-round.

I received an Aerogarden 3 for Mother's Day and my daughter-in-law saw it and just loved it. So when her birthday came around, I got one for her and she is thrilled! I bought a packet of tomatoes separately since they are one of her favorites.

So I got this as a gift for my dad and the first one came DOA (the air pump did not work) once I got the second one I followed all of the instructions on the kit and yes, the flower started to grow, but as time passed it started to rot and eventually all of them died
I would not recommend this product

...if you don't own an AeroGrow get one. The Chili Peppers are "exciting" to watch grow! And a great product to spice things up with!!

Well, this is my fourth garden for my Pro-100, and so far I have more herbs than I can use. The Basil always seems to do well, and this garden is no exception. Tons of basil!

The Cilantro has done better in this garden than it has ever done for me. The parsley is growing nicely. The only herb in this garden not doing so well is the chives, but to be honest I never use them anyway.

Overall this is a great garden, if you are growing it, just keep pinching the tops of the basil off instead of raising the light, until all of the herbs catch up with the basil. Otherwise you might have trouble with the mint and cilantro.

Overall, this garden has been worth the money for me. You can buy more herbs for the money at the store, but then again there is a convenience factor with these gardens. You will always have some herbs available when you decide to cook a certain meal, without going to the store.

While my green bean garden hasn't yet made it to the blossoming stage, I'm somewhat disappointed with this kit for a couple of reasons, but mainly because the included accessories don't match the instruction booklet. There are no holes in the seed pods to insert the support coil wires, which has resulted in about half of my bean plants falling over and breaking once they got more than about 6 inches high. I've grown green beans indoors hydroponically by other methods, and the plants required lots of extra support. I just don't see these plants reaching the harvest stage with the included equipment. Also, one of the seeds failed to sprout - although the do give you a few extra, the one I replaced it with didn't sprout either, and by then there was no point in trying again as any further sprouts would be too far from the lights.

Product did not deliver what was advertized. Out of 7 pods only 3 grew and I am disappointed.

I purchased these and was replacing ones that I previous had in there, because I was moving several hours away from my current house and didn't want to try and travel with a full Aerogarden. Every single seed has germinated and the plants look really healthy, they are starting to get flowers on them now, the only negative that we see is that we also use Cilantro in our salsa mix and if this had a Cilantro section that we could use would make it 10X better.

"Food Beware" is an important media tool for raising awareness of the toxicity of our food, and the healthy alternatives. A handful of chemical companies and agribusiness firms currently dominate the global food system; not through a free market, but through subsidies, massive marketing campaigns, lobbyists who corrupt representative democracy, etc. "Food Beware" gives us a tour that stretches from an international conference on sustainable agriculture, to the lunchroom of an elementary school in France.
This documentary underscores the hazards that come from spraying millions of gallons of toxic chemicals on crops. There are several scenes of farmers in biohazard suits spraying their fields, and we hear from farmers who regularly become ill when preparing the pesticides/insecticides/herbicides/fungicides.
In one scene, the mayor of this town brings together organic and conventional farmers to dialogue about transforming their community's food system.

One of the many hopeful aspects of this film is how it follows the development of an "edible schoolyard" Edible Schoolyard: A Universal Idea. The kids enjoy the process of planting and harvesting; and the school's teachers, cooks and parents take pride in the effort to nourish their children and lessen their exposure to various carcinogens, endocrine disruptors, and other ingredients of corporatized agriculture The Hundred-Year Lie: How to Protect Yourself from the Chemicals That Are Destroying Your Health.

Maybe "Food Beware" is not as stylish as related documentaries such as Food, Inc. and How to Save the World, but it is a very thoughtful production on a critically important issue. Plus, it gives a concrete example of how communities can create a food system that puts people (and entire ecosystems) before profits.

"Food Beware: The French Organic Revolution"

Growing Healthy

Amos Lassen

There is a tremendous rise in disease which seem to be connected to factors in our environment while at the same time we are eating more healthy than ever before.
In "Food Beware" we go to a small French village and it is there that we learn that the mayor's wife has made the school lunch program both organic and locally grown. Not everyone agrees with this and we have a section of interviews in which we learn how the food industry is in ways related to the abuses that our bodies have suffered. Agriculture is big business with its own vested interests and when we think about it, we realize that this big business is ruled by the almighty dollar.
The film assumes that pesticides are what are causing cancer in children but it offers no proof. It is not only pesticides that cause cancer and this was unfortunately not stated.
What the film really does is to indict the viewer for raising children who are the first generation to eat less nutritious foods than their parents. It is a call for organic food and away from anything that has been tainted by pesticides. The film concentrates on children and we see how they eat.
I found the film to be way too long and entirely too repetitive but otherwise it is an eye opener.

This movie was very informative and is done in a way that even someone with no knowledge of gardening (like myself) was able to understand. I cant wait to try Lee's ways of gardening. Lee O'hara also puts his information as in website and email address on it for anyone that has questions about organic gardening and I have asked him more than a few and he has answered everyone of them and made sure that I understood what he meant. He also has a movie that is strictly on growing tomatoes, it is called The organic tomato. I look forward to more dvds on organic gardening by him.

This is a great DVD, I really like the fact that it is all organic and all are easy methods to follow. I have followed his instructions and now I have been harvesting lettuce, bock choi, spinach mustard and other winter greens. I also have to add that I have been writting him a lot with questions when I started planting my veggies and he responded to all my questions and gave me great tips. Great Dvd if you are thinking of starting your own veggie patch and don't have lots of room to grow. Also try the organic tomato, there are a lot of good tips there as well.

This has to be the best gardening video of any kind that I've seen. At my garden store we've watched it dozens of times and it's totally a staff favorite. Lee's informative and easygoing style is fantastic. I think it should be in everyone's collection.

The video is chaptered by category, or can be watched straight through. There are sections on methods for different vegetables, amending soil, organic pest and disease control, simple irrigation...he covers everything. There's even a tomato eating dog.

The video is shot in Lee's California backyard where he has fed a soil that would make anyone outside Alaska envious. It is a simple production, but is of good quality. Picture and sound are fine and the DVD plays perfectly for us.

Anyone with an interest in organic or sustainable gardening/agriculture can learn something from this video, even if it's just that taking time to feed the birds seems to make for a happier life (Lee has songbirds that fly in to eat out of hand).

I'm very pleased with the germination rate of this seed (so far). Package states "7-14 days" for germination. I planted six seeds in starter tray with compressed soil pellet; on Tuesday I had three sprouts. They are going to town so far. Easily three inches tall in 5 days! Now, if the fruit is as good as it looks in pictures, I'll be one happy gardener for this item!

I am disappointed in the seeds. I will really be surprised if there are 75 seeds in the package. After I get over the shock of seeing them and paying the rather high postage when the page indicated that the shipping would be free if I bought more than one packages of seeds shipped to the same address...

I ordered a mixed-up "rainbow" garden for my son and Husband to grow. These yellow cucs, white toms, red carrots, brown bells, blue cabbage, purple broc and orange calliflower all did great! Only the pink eggplant didn't produce, but that may be our fault. We have NO idea what we're doing(this our first ever garden)! Plus we live in Colo. which can be a tough place to grow things. We started everything in little peat pots in a little greenhouse and then moved most of them over to raised beds when it warmed up. All the seeds took. Anyway, we only got one cucumber, maybe because my 5yr. old just ramdomly planted them under a tree instead of in the garden, but WOW, it was such a tasty little guy! We weren't expecting much, but we were so surprised everything did great. I am shocked to read that so many people had such bad luck with this company.

I saw some of the other reviews for Hirts that complained about the germination rate. I bought several Hirts exotic vegetable packets and I have had 100% germination so far. Plants are still small.

I ordered and the seed packets arrived promptly. Interestingly, they arrived in ziploc bags that were really small and only had a few seeds. I love the ziploc baggies! It is so convenient and compact that I am amazed that no one else had sold me seeds this way (not Burpees, HOme Depot, or 15 other suppliers I have used).

I planted the seeds within a month. They were planted indoors in a seed starter tray with the compressed peat moss cylinders that expand with water (less than 10 dollars a tray, multiple suppliers). Because they gave me so few seeds per package I only planted a single seed per peat moss puck and had 100% GERMINATION. Still staggered by this. I never get 100%. Interestingly, I planted about 300 plants from multiple suppliers and the Hirts sprouted first as well. Maybe just lucky but these seeds must have been fresh. Will repost at end of season and advise on the actual cucumbers.

I started late this year so I was debating whether or not to grow seeds and hope they worked or buy more expensive plants and just maintain them. I obviously bought seeds...and glad I did. I laid these about every 6 inches thinking I wouldnt have all of them grow. Needless to say EVERY single one took. Its been just under 2 weeks since I've planted them and they're already 4-5 inches off the ground and have produced 3 big leaves. I planted them in organic humus/manure mix, top soil and natural dirt on hills and I can't honestly see how these plants could get any bigger in 2 weeks. I planted other veggies as well but these seem to be doing the best.

I'm growing the Marketmore cumcumbers in very difficult conditions, in a screened-in, plexiglassed-in porch greenhouse that I built last year. I'm growing them in the Winter, and they are growing! They are now blooming. Will they fruit? Other things I've planted are, but cucumbers like more heat. If the cucumbers decide it's hot enough, they are going to do well. The plant itself looks healthy. The seeds originally sprouted quickly enough, but then the seedlings were taking their slow time doing anything. Now, FINALLY, they are looking like they are going to fruit. This is an experiment for me at this point. I think I'll be able to hand-pollinate them and keep it warm enough for them to grow. If my experiment fails, I feel confident that they will grow with a little warmer environment, the way they were intended to grow.

It's always amazing to me that anything grows in the middle of Winter, but they are looking good at this point. I recommend them to those of you who, like me, are DARING and CREATIVE gardeners, when interpreted means people who break the rules, and to those who do things the way they are intended to be done. These are quality seeds, a good product. I recommend them.

I'll be back to report later when I see edible fruit. :) I can't wait, but I guess I have to. EDITED to say that they are beginning to fruit. I'm hopeful.

Can't give a much better rating yet - will review later. So far the vines are growing well and I am seeing blossoms, so I am keeping my fingers crossed that I will get some cucumbers by the end of June.

Reviews

I'll make this brief: you need to store these nutrients in the FREEZER! Trust me - it makes a world of difference! I had to call AeroGarden customer service on another issue, and he asked me if I had any other questions. I discussed the poor growth I have repeatedly experienced with my salad greens and how they seem to grow white instead of green. He asked me where I store my nutrients, then suggested I keep them in the freezer! My whole family has been amazed by the difference it has made: the lettuce plants very quickly started turning green and the growth rate significantly improved. Try it - it will make you a much happier AeroGardener!!

To obtain a decent crop of tomatoes you need to feed them regularly. AeroGarden know this and have an easy way to rip off consumers. The nutrients are in standard tablet form but you get woefully few for your money. In my case, they also arrived in poor condition - a condition best described as "damp". It looked like they were previously used! If there was an alternative supplier I would definitely recommend using them, but there isn't an obvious one. Maybe AeroGarden could sell a liquid version, but no doubt they would charge an arm and a leg for that too? This is a classic case of a monopoly and one which may stop me using my AeroGarden - which is a shame 'cause the original product is a nice idea.

I was discouraged to see these were very discolored and sticky/watery in the individual packets. Maybe they're old or they were stored incorrectly? I hope they provide the necessary nutrients for my newest aerogarden.

All you need is a hydroponic nutrient solution from, for example, General Hydroponics. It, like other systems, have two or three components, that contain micro-nutrients your plants need all the time and growth phase specific nutrients. For herbs like basil or chives and other non-flowering plants all you need is the growth formula. If you grow vegies and other plants that will bloom or flower, you switch to the other nutrient solution when they start to develop. For ~$35 kit(s/h included), you can get a pint of each solution. You use up 1-3 tsp/gal from each solution. 96 tsp = 1 gallon, which is a little over the capacity of the classic aerogarden. That's about 32 feedings per $25. Each feeding will last about 2 weeks, more or less, depending on the size of your plants. You will have to get a Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) meter to monitor the nutrient concentration or just wing it. 16 months for $35 versus the 6 months for the equivalent price.

These tablets are way, way, way overpriced. This is nothing more than some garden variety (yuck yuck) chemicals and buffer agents, but they are charging almost 20 bucks? Are you kidding me? Clearly, this is where they make a lot of their profit. I am quite fond of our little AeroGarden here, but the cost of these nutrients will probably lead us to retire it. Get real, Aerogarden.

A very easy-to-use sprouter that works especially well for beans and grains (I prefer the old Mason-jar-with-stainless-mesh-lid method for green sprouts). It works so well, in fact, that I was caught off guard when my last batch of lentils (which I previous used jars for) grew faster than I expected, and got to leaf stage!

Would be a great sprouter for kids.

I'v never sprouted before and got this for my vegitarian 9 year old son. It is so much fun and so easy I can't even believe more people don't do it. I appriciate everyone's ratings here because you all (not I'm not southern)helped me decide to try it. With a total of maybe 5 minutes over 4 days, you get a few cups of sprouts. (probably quicker than finding in a grocery store, where you have to bag, twistie tye, scan, load, unload, wash....) We got the salad mix. They taste delicious although our daughter who is younger, thinks the mix is "too spicy." I like the bite to it though. I put them is taco shells, on tomatoe soup, on salad, eat with crackers and cheese. They are very flavorful. Thanks everyone!

As a novice I found the directions obscure and unhelpful and had difficulty with my first try. Only after reading other reviews did I comprehend how to do sprouting.

We wanted to start heading towards more 'raw' foods, and many recipes we found required sprouts of one type or another. I ordered two of these sprouting jars/cups, and they work great. Sprouting is now 100% hassle free. I've already recommended these to others, and wouldn't hesitate to do so again.

For about a year I'd been using a two tier plastic sprouter, about five inches square with a base, two clear trays, and a lid. It worked but I wanted to try this Easy Sprout and I am so glad I did. It is incredibly simple and works perfectly. I use mine for broccoli (I buy organic seeds from Sprout House) and I find I do not need the small seed insert that comes in the kit. The included instructions are ridiculous and if you go by them you will think it's too much trouble to make your own sprouts. All I do is put the inner cup inside the outer cup, pour 1/4 cup of seeds in, fill with water, and let soak overnight. Next morning I lift the inner cup (which has a perforated bottom) out and pour out the soak water, replace inner cup (with soaked seeds in it), fill with water and let the seeds rinse, drain again, I do that twice at least. From then on it's just a matter of rinsing and draining twice a day. This sprouter makes twice as many sprouts per batch compared to the two tiered square sprouter. You can use the Easy Sprouter to store your sprouts in the 'fridge but I have another system for storing so I don't. I have a colander that fits inside an old Tupperware iceburg lettuce keeper. I put my drained and somewhat air dried sprouts in the colander inside the lettuce keeper and put the lid on. That way my sprouts have room to breath and are up in the colander with air circlulating around, yet still covered. Works great. Update - Two small changes would make this sprouter even better - give it some color somewhere because it's nearly invisible and being tall you can easy knock it over not realizing it's sitting there. The other improvement would be to make the little ledges that hold the inner container up in the high position easier to use. They are very slight and slanty so it takes some effort to get the stays of the inner container to rest on them.

I ordered and spread this seed last year and will again this year to supplement my 1/3 acre grass lawn and small field area.

Last year I spread the seed late in the season and was a bit concerned that it wouldn't take very well or at all. However, while working my lawn and field this year I've found small to medium sized patches of clover in areas where there was no clover before. I'm seeding with clover again this year to really get the clover going but I'm confident that even if I didn't seed again, the clover would continue to spread on its own.

If you're looking at clover seed than you may already know this but clover is beneficial to lawns because clover is a nitrogen fixing plant. In other words, clover can naturally provide the nitrogen lawns need to be healthy, directly to the soil, without the use of fertilizers or chemicals. The problem is that clover is killed by weedkillers along with dandelions and other broad leafed weeds.

For my lawn I'm planting clover to supplement the grass, I've stopped fertilizing and I now only use a spot weedkiller directly on weeds as opposed to dousing the entire lawn.
